RedMagic has already hinted that it will once again strive to push the boundaries of Android smartphone specs and performance with the successors to its 6-series flagships in 2022. Now, it may have casually teased a new way in which it plans to do this in what might be under a month’s time from now: the addition of under-display camera (UDC) technology.
A new RedMagic flagship variant without a visible selfie camera might not be all that implausible: the brand is owned by Nubia, which is in turn a part of ZTE, the maker of the world’s first UDC phone, the Axon 20. Now, signs that this kind of display has trickled down to the OEM’s gaming arm has arisen in a new teaser.
It comes in the form of a light-hearted new video ad for RedMagic that, in accordance with imminent Chinese New Year celebrations, contains cats – a lot of cats. One of these 7 "tigers", cast to represent the brand’s 7 generations, is filmed playing with an unfamiliar device that might well be the upcoming new flagship.
This device is not shown from the back, yet clearly has flat edges and also has signs of shoulder triggers along one of them, as well as a large vent that might be part of a new active cooling system. However, most importantly, the display is portrayed as having no punch-holes or interruptions of any kind, besides a slight chin.
Therefore, it seems there might indeed be a new type of RedMagic phone on the way. This possibility is backed up by a recent post by Digital Chat Station that could be interpreted as saying the same thing. Furthermore, this putative "special edition" 7 just might become the world’s first 165Hz UDC phone on its launch.
Then again, the brand might reserve its most extreme specs (which currently top out at a 20,000rpm spinning fan along with 18GB of RAM and Snapdragon 8-series processors) for more cost-effective variants without the new screen type.
