WORTHINGTON — The Worthington High School Esports Valorant Team has earned the opportunity to compete in the first-ever Minnesota State Official High School Esport tournament after an excellent showing at the Minnesota Varsity League Playoffs at Minnesota State University-Mankato on Friday.
Twenty-eight teams from around the state competed for the chance to advance.
Worthington’s seven-member team, coached by William Merida Díaz, ended its seven-week regular season with five and a half hours of competition Friday. They garnered a second place finish in Group C, and were one of six teams from the contest to qualify for the state tournament on June 4 at the Mall of America in Bloomington.
The local team will compete against students from Minnetonka, Eagan, St. Louis Park, Rogers, Totino-Grace, Apple Valley and the Academy For Science and Agriculture for the championship.
Worthington team members include Edgar Méndez Ochoa, Alexander Reum, Antony Quintanilla, Cristina Magaña, Omar Robles, Mir Gossom and Kaw Tha Blay.

The Worthington Esports team is an electronic sports team that participates in a highly competitive tournament using multiplayer-based video games. The team competes in the Minnesota Varsity League, the home for Minnesota High School Esports, with around 50 registered schools and over 800 athletes. The league creates an opportunity for students to advance esports skills in competition and industry, belong to a community, and compete at a varsity level.
