Jared Bynum Scores Career High 32 in Home Area as #15 PC Beats Georgetown – WLNE-TV (ABC6)

The No. 15/15 Providence College men’s basketball team defeated the Georgetown Hoyas, 71-52, on Sunday, February 6 at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. The Friars improved to 20-2 overall for the first time since the 1972-73 season and 10-1 in BIG EAST play for the first time in program history. With today’s victory, the Friars have earned 20 wins in a season for the first time since 2017-18 and the sixth time under Head Coach Ed Cooley. Junior Jared Bynum (Largo, Md.) recorded a career-high 32 points, which included seven three-pointers and 27 second half points. Graduate student Noah Horchler (Melbourne Beach, Fla.) recorded his seventh double-double of the season, finishing with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
“Jared put on a cape and had as good a performance as I’ve seen since I’ve been the head coach here,” Cooley said. “It’s a credit to the team to find him. I’m really proud of our resilience once again.”
FIRST HALF:
Horchler knocked down a three-pointer to put the Friars on the board first. The Friars forced a turnover on Georgetown’s first possession.
The Hoyas led 7-5 at the first media timeout of the game.
At the 13:55 mark, Bynum made a floater to tie the game. Leading up to the basket by Bynum, the Friars had not made a field goal in nearly six minutes.
With nine minutes left in the half, Georgetown held a five-point lead, 19-14, after going on a 7-0 scoring run.
Justin Minaya (Harrington Park, N.J.) answered with two three-pointers in less than two minutes. The Friars ended their scoring drought and regained the lead, 20-19.
The game was knotted at 25 at the final media timeout of the first half.
The Hoyas held the lead, 30-27, at halftime.
Providence shot 10-26 (38.5%) from the field, 5-13 (38.5%) from three, and 2-2 (100%) from the free throw line.
Georgetown shot 11-24 (45.8%) from the field, 2-7 (28.6%) from three, and 6-6 (100%) from the free throw line.
SECOND HALF:
Nate Watson (Portsmouth, Va.) scored the first points of the half for the Friars.
“I thought Nate established the second half with his post presence and his physicality,” Cooley explained.
At the 16:41 mark, Georgetown’s Donald Carey completed a four-point play. Bynum quickly responded with a three-ball to give the Friars the lead, 37-36.
Midway through the half, the Friars took firm control of the game. PC scored 16 unanswered points in nearly five minutes.
Bynum was the driving force behind the Friars’ scoring run, converting from three-point territory on three consecutive possessions at the end of the run.
While the Friars took control, Georgetown did not score for nearly five minutes. During the drought, the Hoyas turned the ball over five times and struggled from the field.
At the 6:23 mark, Bynum made his sixth three-pointer of the game. Horchler added yet another three-ball on the next possession to give the Friars a 20-point lead, 65-45.
With 1:56 remaining, Bynum beat the shot clock for his seventh three-pointer of the game. PC led 71-52.
“My confidence is on a different level,” Bynum said. “I have to credit that to my coaches. They know how good I can be and how much work I put in. Even when you get good results, you have to work even harder to stay consistent.”
NOTES/HIGHLIGHTS:
Providence finished 23-51 (45.1%) from the field, 12-25 (48.0%) from three, and 13-16 (81.3%) from the free throw line.
Georgetown finished 16-49 (32.7%) from the field, 3-21 (14.3%) from three, and 17-22 (77.3%) from the free throw line.
Four players finished in double figures for the Friars, in Bynum (32), Horchler (10), Minaya (10), and Watson (10).
Today marked the Friars’ 10th all-time road win versus the Hoyas in Washington, D.C.
The Friars have been ranked for seven consecutive weeks after entering the polls on December 20, 2021.
The Friars have won 15 of their last 16 games. The team has won its last seven games.
WHAT’S NEXT:
The No. 15/15 Friars return home to take on the DePaul Blue Demons on Saturday, Feb. 12 at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center in Providence, R.I. Tip-off is at 6:30 p.m. on FS1.
Providence holds a 35-13 all-time advantage versus DePaul, including a 19-4 edge at home. Earlier this season, the Friars defeated the Blue Demons, 70-53, on January 1 in Chicago, Ill.
