Dear PC Doctor:
I have a relative coming to visit. I want her to feel comfortable and to be able to use my computer while she’s here, but I do not want her to be able to see any of my stuff. Is there a way to make that possible?

Yes! You can create a separate account on your computer that has access to the programs and internet, but not your personal files.
On a Mac, you’ll activate a Guest account. Open System Preferences, then User & Groups. At the bottom of the list of users, there should be one called Guest User. Click the checkbox next to Allow guests to log in to this computer. The Guest account will now be one of the options on the log-in screen, and you can ask your relative to use that account. As long as you are logged out of your account (and no one knows your password), she will not be able to see anything in your account.
In Windows 10, open Settings and then Accounts. Click on Family and other users. Click Add someone else to this PC and follow the screen instructions. When asked to enter the person’s email address, click I do not have this person’s sign-in information instead. Microsoft will prompt you to create a name and password for this account, which you can share with your visiting relative.
