The Anbernic RG503 is an unusual retro handheld, mainly because of its OLED display. Specifically, the 190 x 84 x 21 mm device has a 4.95-inch OLED panel that resolves at 960 x 544 pixels, a resolution that matches the PS Vita’s display. Unfortunately, Retro Game Corps has demonstrated that the RG503’s 1 GB of RAM holds it back in certain games.
For some reason, Anbernic does not offer the RG503 with anything other than 16 GB of storage, either. Hence, you will probably need a microSD card to store larger game files. Also, Anbernic has equipped the RG503 with the Rockchip RK3566, an SoC that contains four ARM Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 1.8 GHz and a Mali-G52 GPU. Elsehwere, Anbernic has included a 3,500 mAh battery, two USB Type-C ports and a micro HDMI port, should you wish to connect the RG503 to an external display.
Currently, the Anbernic RG503 ships from China, starting at US$149.99. According to Anbernic’s website, all colours retail for US$149.99, but the company will include a 64 GB microSD card for an additional US$8. Please note that you may incur customs fees and duties when ordering from China. Warranty repairs may be costly too, because you may need to return the device to China.
