The runners came through 1000 meters in a blazing 2:24, with a pack of four fighting up front. Ollie Hoare of Australia was first, followed by Josh Kerr of Great Britain, and Craig Engels and Colby Alexander of the U.S.
Engels began to fade, and it looked as if a top three was set in stone—until just one lap later. Kerr threw down a surge with 300 meters left to try and sting the kick out of Hoare.
“When Josh passed me, I was actually quite surprised, I thought he would pass me with a lap to go,” Hoare said in the post-race press conference. “But I was pretty relaxed and I was confident that I could go again.”
Coming into the final 100 meters, Hoare decisively retook the lead, leaving Kerr behind. He crossed the line with a new world-leading time and an Australian indoor national record.
Kerr was thankful for the competition, especially from another international athlete competing on American turf.
“Me and Ollie had a conversation the day after the Olympics and said we’ve got to race together or we’re going to get soft racing all these Americans,” he said, jokingly, after the race. “We’re two of the best 1500-meter runners based out of the U.S. right now, and we’re looking to be the best in the world, so to push each other all the way in any races we run is going to be good.”
A handful of seconds back, another record was broken. Nick Willis of New Zealand snuck under four minutes to complete his 20th consecutive year breaking that barrier after a near-miss on New Year’s Day.
“It was a relief and a moment of internal jubilation … but I’m also very humbled that I had the opportunity to be on the start line one more time in a world class field,” he told Runner’s World.
After setting the American record at her last Millrose Games, Elle Purrier St. Pierre said she knew that she had a target on her back.
The rabbit took the race out hard enough that the pack laid a few seconds back. To no surprise, Purrier St. Pierre—who is no stranger to running from the front—took the wind for the rest of the field. Despite the pressure that comes with leading, she did what she does best: hold onto a fast pace and outlast the competition.
“I was keeping track of the splits and just trying to stay consistent,” she told Runner’s World. “I feel like I have enough confidence now to do something like that.”
Her gutsiness was rewarded with a world leading time of 4:19.30. Finishing second was Josette Norris, who clocked a personal best of 4:20.81.
“I feel really good about it,” Norris said in a press conference after the race. “To come out in January and run a personal best, there’s not much more you can ask for.”
Alicia Monson and Weini Kelati have already gone head to head this year, with Monson taking the edge at the U.S cross-country championships. Fans got to see the two stars duke it out once again over 3,000 meters—without dirt and grass this time.
Pacer Holly Archer took the field through 1200 meters, consistently clicking off 33- and 34-second laps. After she stepped off, Monson was left to lead.
Monson kept cranking, eventually whittling down the group behind her into just one—Kelati. Kelati stayed a thorn in Monson’s side for most of the rest of the race, but the On Athletics Club athlete would pull away in the last 400 to clock a 8:31.62, notching a new world lead, meet record, and facility record.
“We've only touched on speed the last couple of weeks, so when [coach] Dathan [Ritzenhein] told me we were going out in 8:30 pace I was pretty nervous about it,” she told Runner’s World. “But I just trusted our training and knew that I could stick on the pace, and luckily Weini helped through that.”
The 3,000 meter race is 15 laps around an indoor track. For the first 13 laps, the non-pacing leader was John Gay of Canada. Once Luis Grijalva of Guatamala took the lead with 600 left, things got interesting.
“I wanted to make people hurt,” he told Runner's World. “I think went a bit too early.”
NCAA 5,000 meter champion Cooper Teare made a hard push to the front with 200 meters left. U.S. 1500-meter champion Cole Hocker responded, pulling up to Teare’s shoulder as they rounded the last bend—a position that might have looked familiar to track fans.
In the final straight, it looked like an Oregon alumni showdown.
“Me and Cooper were going at it,” Hocker said. “I thought it was me and him, me and him.”
Teare broke Hocker with just a few meters left, but there was one problem. As Teare looked to his left shoulder to see if he was clear of competition, Geordie Beamish of New Zealand squeezed through on the rail to break the tape.
“I was trying to keep my eyes forward,” Teare said. “I think if I didn't leave the inside open, that would've been my race.”
“I had a good feeling it was going to come down to racing Cole and Cooper in the last 100,” said Beamish. “And that's why I did the 3K. I had the option to go in the mile and I feel like Cole has the best finish in the world right now, and I wanted a piece of that.”
Beamish’s time of 7:39.50 set a New Zealand national record. 11 of the 13 athletes set personal bests, with Grijalva also bettering his nation’s fastest 3,000 meter time.

Though it provided no records or world leads, the men’s 400 still had an exciting storyline. Donavan Brazier is back. The 2019 800-meter world champion returned to form after injury last year by earning a new personal best in the indoor 400.
“It felt good to be back out there,” he said. “The key behind the 400 today was just to attack a fast race and get over that last race [the Olympic Trials].”
Brazier said it felt weird not being in the 800 meters. After watching American Bryce Hoppel win in a world leading time of 1:46.05, Brazier found himself missing out a little.

A field full of professionals didn’t scare high school standout Shawnti Jackson. Instead, they raised her to a new level. Behind victor Aleia Hobbs and second-place Mikiah Brisco, Jackson sliced one-hundredth of a second off the high school record set in 2020 by Tamari Davis (which itself tied Ashley Owens’s altitude-assisted mark from 2004).
“I’ve always waited for this opportunity to run against Olympians,” Jackson told DyeStat.com. “I just came to have fun and executed to the best of my ability.”
One of the biggest storylines of the night was Christian Coleman’s return to the track after an 18-month ban for missing three drug tests over the course of a year. He faced stiff competition in U.S. Olympians Trayvon Bromell and Ronnie Baker and 2019 200 meter world champion Noah Lyles.
In the end, it came down to who had the best start. Coleman had the fastest first 10 meters by .01—which was his exact margin of victory over runner-up Trayvon Bromell, who came charging over the last half of the race.
After the long break, Coleman found the return to racing pretty natural. “I think the hard part is just continuing to train and making it to this day,” he said. “This is the fun part.”
In a race that featured 60 meter hurdles area record holder Keni Harrison, it would take a personal best to win. That’s exactly what Jamaican sprinter Britany Harrison did.
The Puma-sponsored athlete ran faster than her previous best to beat a slew of Olympic finalists and Harrison, who ran 0.3 slower than her AR time from 2018.
Sandi Morris showed why she’s one of the best in the world by taking down the literal best in the world. Olympic champion Katie Nageotte had an off day, missing all three attempts at 14 feet and 7.5 inches. Morris chose to enter on that height, clearing it and continuing to soar. She ended the day with a height of 15 feet 7 inches. Second placer Emily Grove was an entire foot back.

The On Athletics Club—coached by Dathan Ritzenhein—had a stellar night, taking home three victories: Beamish and Monson in the 3,000 meters, and Hoare in the men’s mile.
“I'm super proud of them. I think that has created a great environment and culture for them.”
Since forming in 2020, the club sent three members—including Monson—to the Tokyo Olympics. In 2022, they're hoping to send more to the World Championships in Eugene.
“They continue to impress me all the time,” said Ritzenhein. “It makes me want to work harder.”
Former professional runner Kyle Merber revealed on Twitter that previous Millrose Games did not offer prize money.
