PC Moves Up To #15 In National Polls, Justin Minaya Named BIG EAST Player of the Week – WLNE-TV (ABC6)

PROVIDENCE, R.I. –  The Providence College men’s basketball team is ranked No. 15 in the Associated Press Poll and No. 15 in the most recent Coaches Poll.  Both polls were released today (January 31).  The Friars, who entered the polls on December 20 at No. 22/23, have been ranked for seven consecutive weeks.  The Friars were ranked No. 17/17 in both polls last week and climbed in this week’s polls after two victories over ranked teams.  The Friars won at then No. 21/23 Xavier (65-62) on January 26 and defeated then No. 22/RV Marquette (65-63) on January 30.
The Friars (18-2, 8-1) are off to their best start to a season since 1976-77 when they began the season with an 18-2 mark.  Providence has posted Quad 1 wins at Wisconsin, at home versus Texas Tech, at UConn, at Xavier and at home versus Marquette.  The Friars have a NCAA NET ranking of 30.
The Friars will return to action on Tuesday, February 1 at St. John’s at 9:00 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.  The team will play its second game of the week at Georgetown on Sunday, February 6 at 12:00 p.m. FS1.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. –  It was announced today (January 31) that graduate student Justin Minaya (Harrington Park, N.J.) was named BIG EAST Player of the Week.  Minaya helped the then No. 17/17 Friars (18-2, 8-1) post a 2-0 mark last week with two victories over ranked teams.  
Minaya played all 80 minutes in both of the Friar wins over ranked teams last week — a 65-62 win at No. 21 Xavier on January 26 and a 65-63 over No. 22 Marquette on January 30.  Minaya averaged 10.0 points and 6.0 rebounds in the two wins.  He was 5-6 from the free-throw line and 5-10 from three-point territory.  He also added three blocks.  Minaya had 14 points and six rebounds, while shooting 3-7 from three-point territory versus No. 22 Marquette on Jan. 30.  Most impressive, was his defense.  Minaya spent all 80 minutes guarding Paul Scruggs and Justin Lewis.  
Minaya is one of the top defenders in the BIG EAST.  Opponents are shooting just 27.3 percent (35-128) from field when being guarded by Minaya.  For the season, he is averaging 6.6 points per game and 5.9 rebounds.  
This is Minaya’s first season with Friars after transferring from South Carolina.  In four seasons at South Carolina, Minaya started 75 of the 79 games he played.  He scored 602 points over the four seasons.  Minaya also grabbed 420 rebounds and recorded 135 assists.
