Tel Aviv-based in-game creator platform, Overwolf, announced this week its acquisition of gaming checkout and payments platform, Tebex, for $29 million.
Founded in 2009, Overwolf specializes in bringing user-generated content to the video gaming space to more than 95,000 creators and 31 million monthly active users. Overwolf is the all-in-one platform that “enables creators to build, distribute, and monetize in-game apps and mods.”
To date, Overwolf has raised over $150 million from investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Atreides Management, Griffin Gaming Partners, Insight, Marker, Intel Capital, Liberty Technology Venture Capital, Market and Ubisoft.
Founded in 2012, Tebex (formerly Buycraft) provides end-to-end solutions for both game studios and creators seeking to monetize private servers, spanning across the creation and management of webstores to game servers receiving payouts. Tebex is the industry standard for twelve major games including Minecraft, ARK: Survival Evolved, and Rust, and it has enabled creators to earn over $500 million using its monetization platform. In December 2021 alone, creators were collectively paid $10.5 million.
As a result of the acquisition, Overwolf aims to emerge into the private server owners and creator sphere. Meanwhile, Tebex will continue to operate as a business unit within Overwolf, continuing to maintain, build, and innovate on its offering to its existing customers.
“Tebex shares in our unwavering commitment of identifying ways to support gaming communities and game studios who want to empower in-game creators that create content on top of their games,” said Uri Marchand, Overwolf CEO. “As long-time champions of in-game app creators and mod authors, we are excited to work with a new creator category – server owners – to continue to build new experiences in the industry. By combining our industry-leading operations with Tebex’ technology and passionate team, we’ll be able to reach more creators and help them earn a sustainable income for their work.”
“Joining Overwolf enables Tebex to expand its offerings to more game servers, publishers, and more importantly, allows us to further grow the communities of our existing game servers,” said Tebex CEO, Lee McNeil. “Their commitment to helping us grow the game server industry will push Tebex into our next growth chapter.”
