KEARNEY — Kearney High School recently won the Winter State Championship for eSports in Division 1.
The Nebraska Schools eSports Association Winter Mario Kart season kicked off in mid-December. The KHS team played seven teams in seven weeks finishing the regular season with a 6-1 record losing only to Seward 1.
The KHS eSports team made it through two rounds of playoffs to earn the right to travel Feb. 5 to Wayne State College for the NSeSA Winter State Championship tournament. Kearney (6-1), Lincoln East (6-0), Seward 1 (6-0) and South Sioux City (7-0) were the final four teams.
Kearney beat Lincoln East in best two of three matches. Then the team proceeded to the final round against Seward 1. Kearney won, beating Seward 1 in the first two matches. Kearney’s winning track was Excite Bike.
This was Kearney High’s first season competing in eSports. The team has 30 students who practice from 4-6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The spring eSports season starts next week with the following titles, Smash Bros, SMITE and StarCraft II. The spring State Championship will be April 29-30 at York College.

A Nebraska probation officer who reported being kidnapped, robbed and assaulted in December is being accused of lying about the incident, and reportedly was instead in a relationship with her alleged attacker.

Police haven’t released any details about the shooter or a motive, but say the incident is isolated.
KEARNEY — A judge has forbidden a Holdrege man from viewing pornography as part of his sentence for soliciting prostitution in Kearney in August.

According to court records, the probation orders for Carl J. Kramer, 50, and Jacob Kramer, 23, both of Oxford, were amended Wednesday in Furnas County District Court so that they will be allowed to associate with a designated individual or alternate who will possess and discharge a firearm for purposes of slaughtering livestock to be butchered during working hours at Oxford Locker.

Initially, the project was supposed to cost $583,916, but with the added work necessary to stabilize the creek bottom and shoreline, the project will cost $662,528.

The new Chipotle occupies the location where Golf USA stood at 5001 Second Ave. on the west side of Hilltop Mall.

During his tenure at Good Sam, the hospital opened its new emergency room, nine new operating rooms, and the Ron and Carol Cope Heart Center. It opened a bright, spacious new dining room. Last September, the new Dr. Robert Shafer Emergency Center opened to replace the smaller, technologically outdated emergency room.

The Nebraska Department of Education has approved additional planning time for schools during the COVID-19 pandemic.

David James Burke, 32, of Funk, was sentenced to seven years and eight months in prison by Senior United States District Judge Joseph F. Bataillon for possession with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine. There is no parole in the federal system.

Like a sprightly elf, Lisa Lieth took a seasonal job at the Salvation Army before Christmas 2018 to help underprivileged people get food and gifts for the holidays. It was “fun,” she said. She intended to leave after the holidays, but the Salvation Army asked her to stay.
