Square Enix and Platnum’s latest game Babylon’s Fall comes in just outside Steam’s 50 top-selling list on the day of its launch.
Babylon's Fall has finally been released for PlayStation and PC players. However, unfortunately for Square Enix and Platinum Games, it's not doing as well as both companies might have hoped.
Babylon's Fall is the newest offering from publisher Square Enix and developer by Platinum Games who previously brought fans titles like Bayonetta, Nier: Automata, and Vanquish. The game promises to bring Platinum's signature hack and slash combat into a multiplayer setting. The game was first announced back in 2018 at the E3 conference of that year, then brought back into the limelight at E3 2021.

Despite any hype that might have surrounded Babylon's Fall when it was first announced, it's been off to a rough start at launch peaking at less than 650 concurrent players, according to VGC. It has only 18 reviews on Steam, all labeled as mixed. On Twitch, only 3,000 viewers are watching the game on the platform. Few reviews of the game are out but most of them have been negative, especially from journalists and reviewers. Games journalist Jeff Gerstmann, a veteran from Giant Bomb was even quoted saying the game feels "low rent" and “I’m having trouble thinking of a full-price video game that has made a worse first impression on me than Babylon’s Fall."
This comes after the launch of Marvel's: The Avengers peaked at 28,000 leading to a failure, and Outriders peaking at 125,000. With all the success Square Enix and Platinum Games has had in the past, it could be dwindling with the impending failure of Babylon's Fall. The game holds a lot of similarities to Final Fantasy 14 graphically and in aesthetics.
The game, in general, has an interesting idea behind it but with a lackluster story pitched to audiences in the trailer that many players feel is pretty generic by fantasy game standards. After the promise of graphical improvements from Platinum Games, this news comes as a surprise.
There is probably an explanation behind the scenes about how this game has been performing. After making such fan favorite games like Bayonetta it's hard to see these numbers on a game released by the same studio. That being said, Platinum Games has just opened up a new studio in Japan and Babylon's Fall was one of the first games made with this new team. Hope is still on the horizon for future games, even if the current one looks a little bleak at the moment.
Babylon's Fall is available now for PC, PS4, and PS5.
