Esports organization Armada has announced that its closing all operations effective February 28, 2022.

Armada is a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate-focused esports organization that started as a passion project back in 2017. Owners Riley and Jodon said that Armada was founded with the goal of investing in talent and establishing a welcoming community. And the org has done just that over the past five years.

«For us, this is bittersweet.[…] This brand was built by you — the esports community, and especially the Smash community, which welcomed us in with open arms,» Armada stated on Twitter.

But Armada’s owners felt that they don’t have enough time to dedicate the right attention to the organization any longer. While the organization will «cherish the incredible moments and experiences» from the past five years, this is clearly a decision that is best for Riley, Jodon, and others involved.

All team members are now released from their contracts and are fully open to explore other opportunities.

The Smash community was upset by the news, responding that Armada has done so much for the community over the past few years. Smash is a grassroots esports scene where the players and organizations are often the ones that make things happen. Many thanked Armada for their important role in competitive Smash.

Armada Smash professionals include Elegant, Yonni, Syrup, and Shoe. Elegant is a top 10 player and is considered the best Luigi in the world. Armada also had a stream team that was well-known in the gaming world.

While Armada closing its operations is definitely emotional for the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate community, everyone has been very understanding of the owners’ decision. Smash has been a difficult esport for many organizations to get behind. It will be interesting to see where Elegant and other Smash personalities end up and how the community will make up for the loss of Armada’s presence.
