The Ball will be held on Sunday Feb. 13 at the Minnewaska House from 5 to 8 p.m.
“It’s no coincidence that our event is close to Valentine’s Day as one of our favorite things about being an animal welfare organization is to give all the animals as much love as we can until we can find their permanent home,” said PCHS Board President Shauney Moen.
The Share the Love event will include a Valentine’s meal. There will also be a silent auction including items and baskets that can be bid on at the event or online.
An issue that many humane societies face is finding space for all the transitioning animals. The Pope County Humane Society took in 171 animals in 2021 and 116 of them were adopted. “The number would be higher if we didn’t find ourselves at capacity so frequently. It causes us to add to our ever-growing waitlist or refer animals to other shelters,” said Moen.
Another way to support the humane society is to become a foster family for transitioning animals. Fostering is taking an animal to temporarily provide care, food, play exercise and socialization in an effort to prepare the animal for adoption. “We are always in need of fosters for kittens needing bottle-feeding, cats or dogs that might need a little more TLC or simply don’t do well in the shelter environment. We also set up fosters to take in animals at the shelter just to make room for more intakes,” said Moen.
Sometimes animals come into the shelter needing veterinary care. Allowing one of these animals into your home, even for a short period of time, gives the animal a sense of the safety, love and care that it hasn’t experienced before and Pope County Humane Society provides supplies and vetting. “We work with our foster homes in setting up appointments. We provide food, leash, collar, litter, litter box, medication if necessary, some toys and bedding,” Moen mentioned.
Many foster parents ask how long they will have an animal in their care. This question is hard to answer as it depends on the animal and the availability of adopters. Foster families can be an important part of choosing the animal’s permanent home and are sometimes involved in the interview process. The foster family will know the animal better than anyone and will know the right fit for the pet.
The need for foster homes is limitless. According to Moen, “We always have a waitlist for animals, so the more foster homes we can set up, the more animals we can help.” Over the last three months, the average number of animals in the shelter have been 50-60 cats and 4-6 dogs.
Shari Miller has been providing a foster home since last year. “I have loved kittens/cats since I was a child and being able to foster them as an adult has been a dream come true for me. Fostering has been a wonderful experience for not only myself, but my husband and son too! They keep asking when we’re going to get more babies!! Best “job” EVER!!!” she said.
Pope County Humane Society has a foster committee that can help get you on the path toward providing a temporary home for these animals. Lauren is the fostering committee chair and offers advice, “Fostering is a great option for many different situations. It can be short or long term. It could be with bottle fed kittens, or laid back seniors. We try to match each person with the best fit for their home. There is no financial obligation, and you get the benefit of the endless love a pet can provide. There is no better feeling than seeing the progress an animal can have in your care.”
The Pope County Tribune has been serving Pope County since 1920.
