I didn’t quite know what to expect when I put on a Virtual Reality headset on to play a game called “Beat Saber.” But, it turned out to be fun, since as a “Star Wars” fan, the game includes light sabers plus some very high energy music.
It’s just one of the games and experiences available at the PaleyGX Gaming Studio and Virtual Reality (VR) Lab.
"That was just the tip of the iceberg in terms of cool VR stuff,” said Carlos Rivera, who works at the studio, located at the Paley Center for Media on West 52nd Street in Midtown.
Paley Center is a non-profit cultural institution where media, sports and entertainment come together, gaming included.
"Gaming is a huge part of media and certainly had its impact on culture, anybody who has tried to take a device away from their kids while they are playing knows of the impact of gaming,” said Maureen Reidy, President and CEO of the Paley Center.
Susanna Pollack, of the non-profit Games for Change, which empowers game designers and innovators to use games to drive real world impact, said games can be more than just fun.
"Games that teach people information, games that are used in the classroom, games that build awareness around social issues or are even used in health care,” said Pollack.
There is also the opportunity to teach kids to be game designers and creators, not just consumers. PaleyGX has a lot going on for all levels of gamers.
"The latest gaming systems, the hottest newest gaming and VR titles, we do tips and tricks tutorials, coding classes, influencer meet and greets, product launches, and play it first at Paley game drops,” said Reidy.
