Doug Swinehart steps back to put the women CPAs in charge!
Strength lies in differences, rather than similarities. Differences in perspective, interpretations, insight, and life journeys help all of us to be more diverse, inclusive, and well-rounded. Optimizing our differences leads to success and Charlotte Jeantete and Sydney Swinehart are proving that point. In January, the dynamic, yet polar opposite duo became co-shareholders of Swinehart CPA, PC.
One commonality they share is both were born and raised in Taos and graduated from Taos High School four years apart. “I always wanted to be a CPA,” explains Charlotte, who first interned at the firm during high school. On the other hand, is Sydney, “I didn’t plan on being a CPA, I went to college to study education.” Yet, as the two women traveled their different journeys, their paths began to converge.
While Charlotte was learning the ropes working at Swinehart CPA, Sydney had discovered an affinity for accounting in college. Following their passions eventually led the duo to a shared office at Swinehart CPA and becoming study partners as they worked to pass the notoriously difficult, four-part, 16-hour CPA exam. By December 2019, the women had successfully received their CPA licenses. They’ve not looked back. Charlotte’s perseverance, combined with Sydney’s ability to focus on details, have quickly elevated Swinehart CPA to a firm that brings a range of fresh perspective, insight, and determination. “We open up different avenues,” said Charlotte, “and it leads to so many open doors,” said Sydney, seamlessly finishing the sentence — a subtle clue to the success already brewing in this business partnership.
Doug Swinehart, who has been a practicing CPA in Taos since 1990, has not left the firm but today, finds himself working for the two young business partners. Doug has had a significant influence on both women. Reflecting on her journey, Charlotte emphasized that dreams can come true, “Doug never gave up on me and we’ve talked about this for so long — for me to be running this business someday.” In an era when women are speaking up and out, the two powerhouses bring a confident future-facing vision with a home-grown humility to this historically male-dominated profession.
Swinehart CPA has always had a mission to protect their clients’ assets while ensuring they are getting the most out of their financial plans and tax practices. They have never shied away from encouraging clients to call or stop by with questions but as the pandemic continues, the CPA business model continues to change. “Throughout the pandemic, we’ve had so many clients thank us for just listening to them,” explained Charlotte.
The pandemic created a riptide of constant change and chaos for the U.S. economy and CPAs have literally gone to bed at night with one tax policy to follow and awakened the next morning with all new rules. “If we can get through this, we can conquer anything,” explained Sydney, “because we’ve had to constantly stay on top of the changes knowing our clients will call wanting advice,” said Charlotte, finishing the sentence.
Under the tutelage of the dynamic duo who finishes each other’s sentences, there are more dreams to achieve for the Swinehart CPA team and their clients. “We’re going to provide more resources for our clients. We want to bring together our community and become more involved. We work with individuals, businesses, and with people who are starting out with just an idea about starting a business,” commented Sydney. “But we’re not going to stop there,” added Charlotte, “I benefitted from a job shadow internship as a youth, and we plan to offer similar opportunities.”
With infectious enthusiasm for their bright future, the two new shareholders will optimize the advantages their differences bring to the table knowing at their core, their values and passions to deliver the highest quality service to their clients and community are the same. But, it’s not just a business mission they have in common — when asked their preference for red or green chile, they both smiled and answered simultaneously, “Christmas!”
