AYA NEO has finally outlined more details about its next handheld console, previously referred to as the AYA NEO OLED. In the spirit of the device being a compact and lightweight alternative to existing AYA NEO models, the company has settled on the name AYA NEO AIR. Supposedly, the AYA NEO AIR will be the first of many AIR series products, as well .
In a blog post and on Twitter, the AYA NEO team explains that the AYA NEO AIR will weigh less than the Nintendo Switch OLED, which tips the scales at 420 g. Also, the company claims that the AIR’s display will cover 109% of the NTSC colour space, a much wider coverage than current AYA NEO consoles offer. Reputedly, the AYA NEO AIR will be cheaper than the AYA NEO 2021 as well, although this only means that it will cost less than US$1,015.
Allegedly, the AYA NEO AIR is capable of playing numerous titles in 1080p at default quality settings with TDP set to low. As the video below shows, AYA NEO has showcased Axiom Verge 2, Dead Cells, Hollow Knight and Stardew Valley running at approximately 60 FPS, rather than benchmarking more demanding games. In other words, it seems that AYA NEO is managing expectations with the AYA NEO AIR, which it has already confirmed will rely on Ryzen 5000 APUs with RX Vega iGPUs, not the newer Radeon 660M or Radeon 680M. Accordingly, many AAA games will only be playable at 30 FPS in 720p, with low-quality settings and with FSR enabled.
Separately, the company has teased hands-on photos with the AYA NEO AIR on its Discord channel. While the machine appears to contain all essential buttons, it is not much bigger than the Analogue Pocket or even an 8BitDo Pro 2 controller. According to AYA NEO, it has included an X-axis linear motor and an RGB rocker light too, along with a microSD card reader that is visible in several hands-on pictures. Unfortunately, it remains unclear when AYA NEO will begin selling the AIR.
