At the end of last month, Nintendo announced it would be delaying the release of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2.
While there are still plenty of Switch games to look forward to this year, there’s obviously no longer a Zelda game coming out later this year. There have already been requests for Nintendo to port Wind Waker and Twilight Princess to the Switch, so how about that?
There have been some rumours about the same games being re-released on the Switch as well…With all of this in mind (and more), Nintendo Life’s video team has now chimed in on the discussion to share their own thoughts about what other Zelda games Nintendo could release this year in place of BOTW 2.
So check out the video above and tell us down in the comments what Zelda games you think we might see from Nintendo in place of Breath of the Wild 2.

I’d pick up Windwaker a 3rd time. Easier than digging out my Wii U
Wind Waker would be awesome. Probably the best Zelda game that I can actually complete, love OOT and BOTW but eventually I get so stumped I just give up playing the game.
I’d pick up an adapted Windwaker HD WiiU remake ported to the Switch. A little lesser so Twilight Princess as I have played that the most times amongst all Zeldas! But hey, bring them all to meh!
How about a Minish Cap style remake similar to Link’s Adventure on Switch?
WW+TP double pack makes the most sense to me. But Nintendo doesn’t seem to do these kinds of things any more. We did get the Zelda Collector’s disc on the GameCube, though, so maaaaybe it could happen?
Twilight Princess portable would be a dream
Is there really a "gap" that needs to be filled? Most certainly not by more overpriced remastered ports (or in the case of WWHD and TPHD just straight ports).
I want a Majora’s Mask remake a la FFVII remake
It would be nice for those of us that didn’t, you know, have a Wii U.
The Wii U ports make the most sense especially with the Wii U eshop shutting down in March 2023.
Don’t need Twilight Princess or Wind Waker yet again when it only takes what? a matter of seconds to fish out either your Wii or Wii U. Jesus young people are so lazy isn’t it a wonder Companies port the same games to different Platforms hundreds of times ?
I also would love Wind Waker + Twilight Princess Double pack! I never got to play those and I would give them 60$ for such package!

If they did a full remake of Ocarina of Time for the Switch then I know I’d buy it. I’ve been through the original one and the remake on the 3DS a few times and a new version would be cool.

I only got properly into the series with switch. I had played wind waker on the GameCube when I was younger but didn’t finish it and I played a few on the 3ds but didn’t finish them either. But I’ve beaten every Zelda game on switch and I’m ready for more.
If they are going to release a filler game this year I’d rather it be something a bit less expected than wind waker or Twilight Princess (I’d still play those though), like perhaps remaking Minish cap which looks great, or oracle of season. Perhaps another indie calab for the series.

Seriously though, does the ‘gap’ (I mean…there isn’t one really) have to be filled with Zelda. An Earthbound remake would be great.
Just gradually release everything in order. Like two or three a year. I’d buy each and every one.
Zelda II was an ambitious but flawed game. Given its emphasis on 2D combat and exploration, Nintendo could hire any number of talented indie developers to deliver an upgraded modern version in fairly short order. Cadence of Hyrule is proof of concept this sort of partnership can work well.
I liked that time when they said "sorry we can’t share any extra info on Breath of the Wild 2… so here is the sequel to Breath of the Wild" (drops trailer for Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity).
Wind Waker would be an easy pickup for me as it’s one of, if not my favorite game of all time. Twilight Princess is amazing too so a double-pack would be an insane collection.
They have yet to announce anything that interests me releasing on Switch so far. I hope for the Oracle games remade.
I don’t get those saying it’s easily available here Its only easy if you already have the game or a wii u. With limited wii us in existence, eshop closure next year and the only other option being the gamecube or wii u disc second hand for an ever increasing price wiis and gamecubes don’t play well with modern tvs either. So yeah Wind waker needs a re release to be accessible.
I wouldn’t buy neither but Windwaker is one of my favourite zelda adventures and great for others to try. I already have it twice physical in the cube/wiiU and a digital copy was free on wiiU.
Wii u version will always be the best version.

I mean do we really need anything to fill the gap. I mean one year without a Zelda game isn’t the end of the world……………………………. no, no, I woudln’t pay 60 each for wind waker and twilight princess each….. for sure.

Not everybody has a Wii or WiiU laying around
The WiiU didn’t sell that much (I actually had a WiiU) so it’s safe to say that a lot of people didn’t play those remasters
Not to mention the improvements the HD remasters made over their SD counterparts
I already played both on the WiiU, but I’d be happy to play both on the Switch
@GrailUK Apart from May (which I doubt Zelda will release then) there isn’t exactly a software gap as such. The "gap" comes in the form of Nintendo saying years ago that they want Zelda to be an annual franchise and there’s currently no 2022 Zelda game.
It’s difficult to see how Twilight Princess HD or Wind Waker HD can improve on the Wii U incarnations. That inventory and map control was fantastic. Link to the Past getting a Link’s Awakening treatment would be the dog’s danglies though.

Although ngl as soon as I get my Steam Deck if Nintendo haven’t announced anything I’m going to end up emulating that, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess on it anyway. Take my money or don’t, I don’t care.
The Minish Cap, Oracle of Season/Ages, A Link Between Worlds. ?
I’m a cheap SOB, but I’d buy a WW/TP double without thinking twice. Would be my third copy of each. And that might get me to spring for an OLED as well. Throw in the 3DS OoT and a remastered original MM and I’d never go back to my job.
Love the LA remake as well. Minish Cap and the rest that style? Good lord, yes.

You can buy a Wii or Wii U online pretty much anywhere now so there’s no excuse not to have one. We don’t need Nintendo to keep porting old games over and over. The Switch is not a Wii or Wii U portable and honestly there’s enough Ports on Switch already.
They could do a Mario 3D All-Stars and make a second Zelda collection that ties in with the original on GameCube that had NES Zelda, Zelda 2, Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask, but have this one include Minish Cap, Twilight Princess and Wind Waker.
I would say include A Link to the Past as well but that one’s already available on NSO. (Yes I know Mario 64 is as well when that’s also in Mario 3D All-Stars.. but N64 NSO wasn’t a thing yet when 3D All-Stars released.)
What exactly would they change for both re-releases of those games, though?
Twilight Princess HD had those Miiverse stamps that are now useless and Wind Waker had the tingle bottle thing that, also like Twilight Princess’s Miiverse functionality, no longer works.
So what extra new content would they include this time?

Also, spend $200.00+ for a used WiiU and one game? Ports don’t mean that an equivalent number of new games aren’t being made. If they make other people happy, how is that your problem?

Windwaker Hd was one of the games that made the Wii U worth it. Sadly I no longer have a Wii U so my vote is that. Also even tho Im not the biggest fan of TP Ive never played the remaster so Id be interested in that.
However Nintendo could add GB/GBA games to online and fill the gap with a Minish Cap. The Oracle games too.
@RubyCarbuncle I have to disagree the Wii U was a great little system but failed commercially. I think all the gems that people missed like Windwaker HD should come over. Most people are not going to buy a secondhand Wii U at this point.
Im a big Nintendo fan but even I can’t justify buying one at this point especially with the Eshop closing.
@RubyCarbuncle you aren’t helping your point here. Could I buy a WiiU and both games for $300+? Sure, but the WiiU isn’t nearly worth that. Could I bring out my GameCube or Wii? Well, my GC broke and my Wii is having issues on top of the QoL changes they made in the HD versions that I didn’t get to see. You’re more than welcome to not want it, but you don’t have to force your opinion on others.
I’m not sure whether I’d pick up Twilight Princess a third time, even though I do really like it. As for Wind Waker, I’m the rare player who always liked the art style, but found the game itself utterly boring. I’m not big on most of the 2D Zeldas, either, but I did really enjoy Link’s Awakening on Switch, so I’d be interested in another full remake like that. An HD double pack for the 3DS versions of OoT and Majora’s Mask would also be cool.

What I would like is a new AAA Mario or DK platform game for end of this year.
I maybe wrong but apart from Mario Odyssey and the Bowser fury add on, that has been it for brand new AAA platform from Nintendo in house studios.

Wind Waker HD/Twilight Princess HD or a remake of Oracle of Age/Season for the Legend of Zelda games for this year?
I expect a 2D Zelda from Grezzo honestly. Nintendo would have to announce WWHD and TPHD at the same time (because everyone will ask for both), and there’s no way they are going to bundle them together.
@RubyCarbuncle Are you kidding? Barely anyone has a WiiU to be able to play WW HD and TP HD.
I feel like the idea that "there must be a Zelda game released each year" is way overstated. Yes, that is technically what has ended up happening over the last 10-15 years if you include the Hyrule Warriors games, but I don’t think annualized Zelda is a steadfast rule that Nintendo is obliged to follow. I could totally see Nintendo not releasing any Zelda game this year and just letting everyone wait a few months until spring 2023 when BOTW2 launches.
Last year, Skyward Sword HD was announced in February and released in June, 5 months later. If Nintendo wants to announce Zelda port(s) for release this year, the clock is ticking.
Since The Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD already got sold on their own for the Wii U, I could imagine them doing a double pack for the Nintendo Switch. Maybe even a triple pack, where the put an HD remaster of Link’s Crossbow Training on top, since that could just reuse the assets from Twilight Princess HD.
About GREZZO… They had released an artwork of their next major project last year, which didn’t really look like Zelda. I’d love to see remake of the Oracle games, but I don’t think we’re going to see those before BotW2.
As for the Broadcast Satellaview games, I’ve wanted those for years, but it might be somewhat tricky to modernize them in a satisfactory way. They were like television shows with four episodes each, because they had actual live narration. There is a really great restoration project out there, which even has some good voice acting, but the episodic format really makes this something quite weird, where Nintendo just might not be interested. These games were also super short and easy, since you had to be able to beat them within four hours.
I don’t think there’ll be any kind of Zelda releases this year, and it’s not a matter of how complete any possible remake could be, it’s about not competing with your own products – when Pokémon Scarlet and Violet were announced, people said it was too early because Legends had just been released, and those games were still 8 months or so away; so releasing any Zelda game before BotW2 could make people lose interest in it no matter how much they say that they want more Zelda stuff, and that’s something Nintendo definitely would like to avoid.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Splatoon 3, Bayonetta 3 and the new Pokémon games are going to be released later this year, so I think that those games will fill the gaps and that any new major releases will arrive next year. BotW2 won’t arrive this year, that’s disappointing, but people being eager for a Zelda game is something good for Nintendo, they wouldn’t want to divert the audience’s attention just before its release.
Wind Waker HD seems like the number one candidate.
predictable upgrades for Switch would be 1080p, Gyro Motion support, HD Rumble & QOL adjustments.
Although I’d rather see Ocarina of time(3DS) get ported over, again with the following enhancements i listed above for WW, but in true widescreen and 60fps. Wind Waker HD will be locked in at 30, there’s no way the Switch will be able to hit above that.
The same experience, over and over again, is tiring.

There was an awful lot of Switch owners that did not have a Wii U, but many on here seem to overlook that when Nintendo release Wii U ports.
I think they could release ministre cap seasons/ages and four swords that would be cool for people who have not played them

@westman98 The only reason "there must be a Zelda game released each year" gets brought up is because Nintendo themselves said years ago that’s what they’re going to do. If it wasn’t for Nintendo’s comments, most people would likely think Nintendo would have years with no Zelda.
Personally, I feel like we’re drowning in Zelda games, but if we have to keep the pipeline pumping out ports and remakes, I’d say an upgraded port of Ocarina of Time (substantial improvements beyond graphics – overhaul the navi character) would make the most sense. It’s often cited as being the best Zelda and it’s got much more name recognition than some of the other titles I’m seeing mentioned here.

@RubyCarbuncle or perhaps the ‘young people’ are so young they’ve never owned a Wii or Wii U so have never played those games. Have you considered that?
@Harmonie what they mean is that every year, we get at least one mario or zelda game, whether that is mainline or spinoff. Since BOTW2 is no longer coming out this year, its anyone’s guess to what the zelda game will be announced. Personally, id like one of the old, 2d games (but a new 2d would be nice as well).
The Wind Waker HD and/or Twilight Princess HD are the easiest for Nintendo to bring over. A very low-effort, last minute thing for them to source to those devs. Already gathering dust, as mentioned in the video.
I was looking into something related to the Four Swords trilogy too, as I believe those three games hold as much importance to Breath of the Wild 2 as Skyward Sword and Age of Calamity. If we were to get some kind of re-release of one of those three games, it’ll definitely contribute to prepping us more.
Lastly comes the Oracle remakes, something very obvious to consider thanks to Link’s Awakening.

Contrary to your belief, The Legend of Zelda has been one of the most prominent series from Nintendo, with some sort of release every year.
Looking at the Switch, we’ve had the following (not factoring in NSO):
2017 – Breath of the Wild
2018 – Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition
2019 – Cadence of Hyrule, Link’s Awakening
2020 – Cadence of Hyrule DLC, Age of Calamity
2021 – Age of Calamity DLC, Skyward Sword HD, Game & Watch
They are far from abandoning Zelda, especially when they have various teams, contractors, and an indie dev to work on games.

Please not Wind Waker again. The only Zelda I have completed only once is Twighlight Princess when it first came out in 2006. I can barely remember it, so would be almost like a new game to me. Been praying for this since the switch came out.
Since I never owned a Game Cube or WiiU, I’d love a Wind Waker remaster so I can finally play that game.
@Felix_Sanchez Sir, I was deeply impressed by your novel idea of a Zelda II remake with the sensibilities and fluid motion of Metroid Dread. In fact, I am more than impressed – I am very, very excited about the possibilities. Zelda II had many concepts that could benefit from elaboration and exploration in the present day, and its unflinching challenge is sorely needed these days. I am totally in your corner here!
I say we will get nothing. No thing. WW and TP releasing in the second half of 2022 would mean they release mere months apart from the new entry. And: The BOTW2 delay seemed like a late decision, which would not give them enough time to prepare those ports, let alone anything more ambitious.
Any would be good, but why not aim for an Ocarina of Time or (gasp) Majora’s Mask???

I don’t expect much but would love to see WW and TP.
I have bought OoT five or six times in my life so have zero issues with buying games mutiple times if they’re worth it.
A port of Twilight Princess HD would be lovely, since i always wanted to play it and i LOVE Skyward Sword!

@Grumblevolcano there’s no way zelda will be an annual release, they will run out of games to port soon, and actual remakes will take them too long whilst also making a new game.

I’d like "The Handheld Collection". All the Gameboy & DS games brought over. Unpopular, but would exclude versions already on Switch(OG, 2, LttP, Awakening, OoT, & MM)
No love for Phantom Hourglass or Spirit Tracks making it to the Switch? They could be bundled with Wind Waker.

I get why everyone bangs the drum for TP and WW to be ported over to the Switch, and it surely makes sense that they will come at some point… but I’d love to see Ages/Seasons get the LA remake treatment – that would be a real treat!
I also feel as though we are "due" a brand new 2D Zelda around about now too… so fingers crossed we don’t have to settle for WW/TP ports.
I’d like a handheld collection for sure, but I’d buy Twilight Princess and Windwaker FOR A FIRST TIME. I know that many of you have bought every Zelda game, but I skipped on the GameCube in favor of PS2 (those were different days, as in I did not have disposable income and thus had but one singular console), and never owned a WiiU. Heck, the Wii in my household was my parents’ console, so truthfully I skipped on a lot of things that were on that console too. That was a “party console,” if that makes sense, while my PS3 and 360 were my more serious consoles that I moved out with in my early adulthood. I’d love the chance to play the games on Switch. I’m really supportive of the Switch being a “one stop shop” for all things Nintendo, as well. I’ve played both games in some capacity, but not in the way I generally would enjoy it best.
@Harmonie yeah, we dont need a new zelda game this year. I would be fine with or without a port, or any zelda concept. And yes, the constant asking for ports by people can get a little redundant, its what they want (and I want as well, who wouldnt want a nice WW/TP port). But history has shown that we get one every year, so i see no harm in letting people get excited. Of course its a whole other conversation if people dont get what they want and then are genuinely mad about it, then thats just stupid

I desperately want the 3DS remasters of OOT and Majora’s Mask to appear on the Switch. I’m afraid that Nintendo will view them as unnecessary since the original N64 versions are available with Nintendo Switch Online, but the remasters are very well done and don’t deserve to die with the 3DS.
@Nancyboy I got one for €80 and games for €10. Take the time to look around and you’ll find one. I don’t understand how you’re perfectly ok paying full Price for ports when you can save yourself money this way.

The original Legend Of Zelda remade using the BOTW engine. Kinda like how they used a ‘2D’ engine to concept BOTW, but in reverse.
Almost like a BOTW2 teaser.

Not everyone owns either of those three systems (you did forget one, if you wanna be inclusive). Neither could everyone afford to get not only one of these increasingly rare and expensive previous systems plus the increasingly rare and expensive games, but in the case of the Wii and especially the GameCube the other equipment required to use it (a TV that takes the signal the Wii and GameCube output, for one).
—Someone who owns a GameCube, one and a half Wii (gave up the shared one I got another), a Wii U and a Switch.
And I still wouldn’t mind a remaster of either; though I’d rather they remastered (or put on VC) any of the other games that are more difficult to access—any of the handheld games (including and especially the Toon duo—even if that would suit a bundle with Windwaker better, which could set a precedent allowing for the Capcom games to be put in one, if they can be arsed to do the licensing), Four Sword Adventures, or even Link’s Crossbow Training)

@RubyCarbuncle Heck, if that’s the case, it’s certainly worth it. The WiiU and still available virtual console is worth that price, even though I still have no issue with ports. Plenty of opportunity for everyone to play what they want.

Perhaps I was a bit snappy and somewhat irritable/moody with people here when I didn’t need to be. I was having a bad day (real life stuff) but nobody here deserved to be on the receiving end of my mood so to anyone seeing this I apologise for snapping.
The crazy sales success of Skyward Sword HD doesn’t bode well for a double pack happening, especially since SS, TP and WW all have pretty much the same amount going for them. I mean, they’re selling Links Awakening at around full price.
My preference is Twilight Princess, but otherwise I also see Gameboy or GBA games coming to NSO maybe by the end of the year, so theres some hope there. Any release is good news. Dont need them all at once, we will after all, never run out of games to play.
I’ve replayed wind waker and twilight princess recently (although I only finished wind waker, I’m stuck in the water temple in twilight princess and really can’t be asked to put the effort in) and I own them on gamecube an wii respectively.
Everyone is expecting those two to be released on Switch and to be honest Id much rather an Ocarina of Time HD remake. Or…a completely new Zelda game which I think could actually be a possibility.
That is unless they release wind waker and twilight princess as a double pack and put in some worthwhile extras like achievements, new modes, artwork, music player etc.
Much as I love the suggestion that I should simply buy a $300 console to play it, I would love to have the Wind Waker HD on Switch. On the other hand I’d also like to get the Oracle games and Minish Cap. Those games are long overdue for a new edition. I never really liked Twilight Princess, and we’ve had so many editions of OOT over the years.

Minish cap please! It’s one that escaped me back in the days and only had a time limited eshop run that was only available to those in the 3DS ambassador program, which I was too late for.
@RubyCarbuncle except the ports sell really well so I’m not sure you’re in the majority assuming you understand what that word means.

You guys want them to re-re-release Zelda games? Yikes, man. It’s true, Nintendo fans truly are masochists who love abuse. All I’m saying is that the next Nintendo system had better have a 100% transferrable library from the Switch. I don’t care how good Splatoon 4 will be. Stuff like that won’t slide with me. And there is not a Zelda game under the sun that I would spend money on more than once.
Except Cadence of Hyrule.
I wish we could get another 8 bit or 16 bit Legend of Zelda game.
Every one of us has his/her personal wish lists. And every one of us knows, deep down, that Nintendo never fails to disappoint when it comes to what «ought» to happen. Some examples: including Super Mario Galaxy 2 in the Mario 35th Anniversary Collection, having no 35th Anniversary compilation for Zelda (or Metroid, for that matter), no DLC boards or characters for either Switch iteration of Mario Party, no ability to permanently purchase individual legacy games instead of getting scalped to subscribe to Switch Online (I personally am NEVER going to bother with the «Upgraded» version), no Xenoblade Chronicles X on Switch (just to tick off Xenoblade completionists), and no option for their consumers to choose for themselves whether a cartoony military strategy title (Advance Wars) was «inappropriate» given the war in Ukraine.
I’m not saying that none of these things will ever happen, but Nintendo’s record with the Switch has hit-and-miss in terms of opportunities not explored. Most of all, we should all know full well by now that Nintendo does their own thing, period.
Which is why I don’t hold my breath or waste time regarding baseless speculation. I’ll become interested once there are actual games/content announced with firm release dates (that don’t get yanked at the last week).
I am tired of remaster ***** machine from Nintendo I want new stuff , I want BOTW sequel that’s it thanks!
@sixrings I know what majority means I was just in a bad mood at the time and I took it out on some people here but I’m ok now and off subject, sort of but look up a guy called young defiant on Youtube and look at his Review for Kirby and the Forgotten Land, he seems like a disgusting person.

@JasmineDragon This is how I feel as well. I’d like them to be combined for max value, but I’m realistic.
I do think a lot of the die-hard Nintendo faithful forget that not all of us were in on the Wii U (I didn’t even understand that it was a different console from the Wii until recently).
BOTW 2 was only delayed by a few months, I highly doubt that’s enough to justify putting aside even more time and resources, however small, for a rerelease.

@munstahunta You’re right, BOTW 2 is literally the only game thats coming out that I actually really want on Switch. Imo I dont really like the Switch. Smash, BOTW, Ultra Street Fighter 2, are the only ‘big’ games I’ve actually cared about, and there’s so much shovelware on the eshop that it just puts me off buying anything. Plus my Switch has had problems since day one. And to top it all off the Switch online subscription service is an absolute piss take joke. I play my Wii much, much more than I play Switch. And I’ve just picked up the full collection of project rainfall. The 3ds and Wii is what I play. My Switch will gather dust until BOTW2.

I’m one of those people.
I’ve bought several of the ports precisely because I never had a chance to experience them on the Wii U.
By the time I got around to looking at a Wii U to complement my PS4 it was already basically a corpse.
Give me something related to Minish Cap and/or the Oracle duo and I’ll be more than satisfied. At least something we haven’t seen rereleased a bazillion times. Kthx
I’m sure they’ll find a way to cash in on people somehow eager to pay $60 for a "remaster" or ‘slightly kinda improved version’ in normal terms, of a game they most likely still own.
@RubyCarbuncle People here are voicing their objections against paying $60 for a 9-year-old remaster of a 20-year-old game. And, fair!
But I never got to play Wind Waker. So as hard of an ask as $60 is… I’m definitely not paying $90 to play the original on my Wii. And that disc was a killer deal compared to other prices I’ve seen! (I still curse my past self for not looking harder for it years ago – and also not picking up a Wii copy of Prime Trilogy when I saw it on shelves, before everyone started caring about Metroid again.)
It’s possible buying a used Wii U and getting it on the e-Shop might actually come out to less than that. Still probably over $60, though… for one game.
So if Nintendo actually wants my money, they should probably just move it over to the Switch as well. And everyone who’s already played it – well, they don’t have to buy it again!
