Students at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic School in Allen Park will have access to a new esports program, thanks to a $1.3 million donation.
In a surprise announcement on Friday, the Rev. Tim Birney revealed that the Catholic school had been named a beneficiary in the estate of late parishioners Don and Dolores King.
“This couple were longtime parishioners at St. Frances Cabrini, but had no children to call their own,” Birney said in a news release. “Their ‘giving without counting the cost’ will enable our school, and the children who reside within it, to receive countless years of formation: personally, morally, spiritually and intellectually.”

The school has pursued numerous STEM-related improvements over the last several years — including the addition of a high-tech laboratory and an interactive learning space.
The gift will enable the school to continue developing its technical programs in an initiative Birney dubbed «Cabrini Reimagined.»
“Cabrini High School will now offer a highly technical and cutting-edge sport in a state-of-the-art facility,” Birney said. “Meanwhile, we are also making countless renovations across the campus, including a full remodel of the biology labs and adding more interactive technology in classrooms.”
The Cabrini eSports Program room is already complete, and the other projects will commence over the next several months, with the bulk of the work scheduled to take place this summer, Birney said.
Cabrini is one of just three schools in the Archdiocese of Detroit to offer an esports program.
