Puzzle Quest returns after over ten years between titles as Puzzle Quest 3 is released worldwide alongside a new trailer.
Infinity Plus Two released Puzzle Quest 2 way back in 2010 and 505 Games has officially launched the next title in the series. The latest reveal of Puzzle Quest 3 coincides with an immediate free-to-play worldwide launch through Steam Early Access, the App Store, and Google Play Store.
Puzzle Quest 3 includes several changes that modernize the puzzle combat formula while staying true to the match-three RPG roots. Like many other games releasing in recent years, Puzzle Quest 3 will follow a live-service model which will allow 505 Games to continue adding new features and content for the foreseeable future. 505 Games acquired Infinity Plus Two last year, but the developer and publisher have yet to confirm whether this new release will come to consoles like previous titles.
The Puzzle Quest 3 trailer gives fans of the series an idea of the game's narrative which takes place in Etheria 500 years after the original title. Just like the previous titles, Puzzle Quest 3 players will have to match color coordinated blocks in a timely manner to clear them from the screen. Puzzle Quest 3 features five different hero classes for players to choose from, and 505 Games has confirmed that more will be added to the game in the future, increasing replayability.
505 Games and Infinity Plus Two have created several new heroes for Puzzle Quest 3 with each offering their own powers. Combining RPG and match-three mechanics, the Paladin, Berserker, Shaman, Assassin, or Necromancer will gain mana by clearing blocks in order to cast powerful spells against enemies that accompany the stages. Players will also be able to equip the heroes with a plethora of weapons and gear, strategize an ideal onslaught with different abilities or spells, and unleash ultimate abilities against the countless enemies among Puzzle Quest 3's bestiary.
Puzzle Quest fans who try the latest release within the first month of the game's launch will receive in-game rewards such as gems, gold, and powerful gear which will help players along their journey. Going beyond the narrative experience, Puzzle Quest 3 fans can also work with other players through the game's Kingdom Alliance system or compete in PvP matches against players on Steam, Google Play, or the App Store. There are also quests, dungeons, and skirmishes for Puzzle Quest 3 players to join others in doing outside the main story content.
Contrary to previous Puzzle Quest titles, Puzzle Quest 3 has a heavy emphasis on 3D graphics and dynamic environments that enhance the game's RPG nature. The release trailer shows the heroes of Puzzle Quest 3 interacting with an assortment of characters from the story, with certain aspects of the narrative decided by dialogue choices made by the player. It's currently unclear whether this will result in branching storytelling or different endings for the free-to-play game, but that's historically the case for many RPGs.
Puzzle Quest 3 is available now for Android, iOS, and PC.
