LORETTO — Penn Cambria sophomore Carter McDermott was one of the brightest stars at Tuesday’s Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference championship track and field meet at Saint Francis University despite admitting he’s still getting the hang of some of his events.
Though he just started learning jumps last summer, McDermott set the LHAC long jump meet record with a leap of 22 feet, 10.5 inches, won the triple jump and was part of Penn Cambria’s first-place 1,600-meter relay team.
“I just started this year for high school,” McDermott said. “It’s been nice, but I have some high expectations for the next two years, being only a sophomore and doing this well. My speed in my long jump, I think, is the key.”
McDermott has already broken six records this season.
“It’s good to set a meet record, and I have set a few recently,” McDermott said. “I got three school records, two at the Northern Bedford Invitational and now one here. It’s pretty cool.”
Though he’ll be trying to qualify for states for the first time at next Tuesday’s District 6 championships, he has been working with someone who has already been through the process.
“He’s got one of the best jump coaches around in Lauren Michina, who has been to states and does an absolutely fabulous job with him,” Penn Cambria coach Todd Niebauer said. “He’s super raw. The sky is the limit for him, and I think he can jump at the next level for sure if he stays with it. To just come into that part of the sport this year, he has a super high ceiling and a great work ethic. He can go really far.”
McDermott’s teammate, Josh Stolarski, won the 400-meter dash in 51.5 seconds, finished third in the long jump and is also on the rise.
“This is my first year competing in the 400,” Stolarski said. “I’m not really the best yet, but we’re getting there. I’m still trying to figure things out, but I’m looking for the school record, which is 50.4 seconds, and I’m hoping to win district gold.”
Other local boys winners included Bishop Carroll’s Jacob Harker in the shot put, Central Cambria’s Jon Wess in the 110-meter hurdles and fellow Red Devil Aiden Lechleitner in the 800-meter run.
Lechleitner, who shared his bet with his older brother Adam regarding who would be purchasing porterhouse steaks for a future family meal recently, just missed on winning the bet (finishing the 800 in less than two minutes) outright with a time of 2:01.63, but he may have found a loophole during his performance for Central Cambria’s 3,200-meter relay team.
“He just split 1:57.5 according to my phone on the (3200-meter relay),” said Adam Lechleitner, who attending the meet to support his brother. “I don’t know if that’s going to count for our deal or not. I’m going to have to negotiate with him. I’ll give him through states, because that’s when he’ll get the best competition, so it’s only fair, but I think I’m going to be buying him steaks here pretty soon.”
Though Adam seemed willing to give Aiden the benefit of the doubt, the younger brother still said he needed to do it in the actual 800-meter run.
“I was trying to catch (Calan) Bollman from Chestnut Ridge as the anchor,” Aiden Lechleitner said. “I never got him, but it was a good split. I had 2:01 in the 800, but hopefully at districts I’ll get there. I wish (the split) counted, but I don’t think it does.”
On the girls side (there were no boys or girls team championships awarded), Central Cambria’s Abigail George won the 800-meter run and helped the Lady Devils win the 3,200-meter relay.
“I knew I had to sit the first lap (in the 800), and once I hit the last 200, I had to go all out to the finish,” George said. “I want to get top three at districts, and I’m really hoping to reach that goal. My time has been dropping all year.”
