Paramount+ has confirmed that “Players,” a League of Legends mockumentary described as “a comedic docu-style series exploring the world of Esports through a fictional League of Legends team’s championship pursuit,” will be coming to the streaming platform sometime in 2022.
The show was officially announced last August and billed as a story about an LCS team looking to win their first championship after years of close calls and heartbreaks. In order to make it to the top, they’ll need their prodigy – a 17-year-old rookie – and their 27-year-old veteran to put aside their egos and work together. According to LCS Commissioner Chris Greeley, some LCS teams have also lent their branding and logos to the show.
Paramount also released the first image from the Riot Games produced series, a promotional photo featuring what appears to be the five players of the LCS team that the show is about. League of Legends esports fans may recognize some of the faces as Immortals bot laner Noh “Arrow” Dong-hyeon, mid laner Jung “Youngbin” Young-bin and coach and analyst Michael “Miko” Ahn — who is also currently a freelancer for Upcomer. The other two people featured in the promotional image are actors. It is unclear as of yet which two of the main five players will appear as the rookie player and veteran player.
“Players” was co-created by Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault, who previously created “American Vandal,” a parody of true crime documentaries that was released on Netflix. “American Vandal,” which centered on high schoolers, was praised for its tone, humor and authentic depictions. If the crusty Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard (originally released in 2001) held by the character in the center of the image is any indication, we can expect this League of Legends mockumentary to bring the same kind of authenticity and specificity.
Just a fun guy who likes playing games and also likes writing about people playing games.
