Before you start off on this spine thrilling game, read below for some tips that should help you boost your gameplay experience.
The flashlight is an essential component of the game and it runs on batteries. Yep, you guessed it right — batteries always run out when you need them the most.
Since In Sound Mind is a horror game, you’ll need the flashlight most of the time. So, remember to keep an eye out for batteries and collect them whenever you find them. Another trick is to make sure to keep the torch switched off whenever it is not needed. Conserve your battery as much as possible because they’ll be some areas where you won’t find batteries to charge your torch at all. So, it is best to adjust yourself to the minimal use of the flashlight.
You will find the flashlight on the high shelf in the storage room of the building at the beginning of the game. Remember to collect it by hopping on the crates and under the overhead pipes. You can also find a battery in the back locker of the service hallway.
Whenever you enter a new area, you’ll get an autosave. It is signified by an animated running cat icon on top right corner of the screen. Make sure not to switch off the game during this time as it is the only way to save the game.
The game does not have an option to save progress through the menu screen. However, your progress will be auto-saved as you move between floors. So, if you need a quick save, all you need to do is go to the elevator, select a floor and get off.
As you complete your building visit, you’ll proceed into the supermarket at the beginning of Virginia’s tape. As you enter the general section, you will find a mirror at the end of the shelves. As you proceed closer to the mirror, strange things will start to happen and a ghost (Watcher) will rush into the mirror causing it to shatter. Remember to pick up the shard of the mirror as it will become your melee weapon for the rest of the game.
The mirror will help you melee attack your enemies as well as break open things such as vents and tapes. The shard’s reflection will also reveal items and hidden objects for you to collect. While you may have to switch to this shard often during the game, the primary purpose of the mirror shard is cutting yellow tape. An interesting advantage of the mirror is that if you make the Watcher stare at it, it will panic and run away.
The handgun is an important weapon that will keep enemies at a distance. You will have to collect the 3 handgun parts and assemble them before it can be used. You will find the three parts of the handgun (grip, the barrel, and the slide) on your first visit to the building.
You’ll find the pistol grip behind a washing machine in the laundry room. The pistol barrel can be found underneath the table in the maintenance room on the right side at the end of the hallway. The pistol slide is on top of a vending machine on the second floor and can be reached by climbing over boxes. Once the 3 pieces are collected, the gun can be crafted on the table near the light switch at the beginning of the game.
While the pistol is permanent, you will need to collect bullets. Thankfully, you will have more than enough chances to pick up ammo, so you don’t need to worry too much about ammo conservation in the early stages of the game. However, as you progress, the frequency of ammo pick-ups is reduced, so it might be a good idea to learn to conserve your ammo from the start.
Although not flawless, In Sound Mind makes an interesting horror FPS game with a combination of interesting puzzles, creepy visuals, and an engaging story.
