Boom Esports have won the first major DOta 2 LAN in months.
The first top tier Dota 2 LAN in months has come to a conclusion with Boom Esports taking a close-fought 3-2 win over Tundra Esports in the grand final.
Boom took the win after an incredibly close final that saw the teams trade wins until finally, it was Boom who came out on top in the final game five. Both teams brought out some heroes that had not been seen so far in the competition and turned the young patch meta on its head. As an added bonus the final saw former TI winners Kuro «KuroKy» Salehi Takhasomi, Johan «N0tail» Sundstein and Syed Sumail «SumaiL» Hassan some of the games in the final.
The win sees Boom take home around $109,000 and establishes them as one of the top teams going forward. While this event did not give any DPC points, you’d have to think that with this kind of play, Boom will be making an appearance at The International 11 later this year.
Boom, coming from the SEA region, were not expected to be a top contender in the event. Despite dominating the SEA DPC tournament, many thought the region would not be able to compete with some of the top European teams in the event. However, Boom proved that wrong, going undefeated in a stacked Group B and taking out the likes of Team Secret and TI champions Team Spirit. The only team they lost to was Tundra in the first round of the upper bracket.
Tundra on the other hand came into the event having made an unexpected roster change in the mid-season break. Many were unsure how the team would perform, both thanks to the roster change and the fact that they had only really had success on the previous patch, so it was unknown if they would be able to figure out the new patch as many more experienced teams would. Tundra came second in their group but then took out Boom and Nigma Galaxy to reach the final.
Elsewhere TI champions Team Spirit could only manage fourth place, while North American DPC Regional Finals champions TSM could only manage top eight, which will surely be a significant disappointment for both teams.
The Gamers Galaxy LAN, hosted by Nigma Galaxy parent company Galaxy Racer, was the first high-level LAN since The International 10 in October 2021. The first Major of the DPC season was cancelled due to COVID-19 and replaced by regional online tournaments. Fortunately, the Gamers Galaxy Invitational went off without any significant disruption due to COVID, unlike the recent IEM Katowice CS:GO tournament that had multiple players catch the virus which disrupted schedules and lineups.
