Four area high school teams will compete in Michigan’s first in-person high school esports playoffs on Sunday at the Block House in Alma.
Mt. Pleasant High School, Sacred Heart Academy, Hemlock High School and Meridian Early College High School have made it to the final four in Rocket League action.
Block House, a restaurant, bar and gaming venue located in the renovated Opera House building on East Superior Street, has hosted the eight-week league that featured teams from nine area high schools.
The action begins at 3 p.m with Hemlock facing Meridian and then Mt. Pleasant squaring off against Sacred Heart at 4 p.m.
The losing teams will play in the consolation round at 5 p.m. with the winners advancing to the championship match at 6 p.m.
Families, friends and fans are invited to attend the games in-person and they will also be broadcast live online at twitch.tv/blockhouselive.
The weekly matches have drawn interest from college esports scouts, according to co-owner and managing director Anthony Collamati, who is also an associate professor of News Media Studies at Alma College.
“A player on the Meridian team was surprised to receive a call from a recruiter as far away as Maine,” he said.
The winners of the competition will receive the Block House Esports League Cup to display at their high school for the next year.
Other area schools that are members of the league are Clare, Ithaca, Alma, Carson City-Crystal and Moery Flextech.
In April, Block House will begin its next league featuring middle school age students.
