In the laptop space, it’s been proven time and time again that AMD’s Zen 3 Ryzen H-series can generally match or outperform any mobile 11th gen Intel Core H-series option. This fact extends to mini PCs as well, but the lack of mini PCs with such AMD CPUs can make it tough to show any direct comparisons. The Beelink GTR5 will be one of the very few mini PCs to come with the Ryzen 9 5900HX as standard.
In our full review of the GTR5, we’re able to confirm that its Ryzen 9 5900HX can indeed offer a similar level of performance as the MSI Delta 15 or Gigabyte A7 X1 which also run on the same AMD processor. Thus, the GTR5 CPU is not significantly throttled despite the NUC-sized form factor. The Beast Canyon Core i9-11900KB NUC, which is Intel’s fastest NUC to date, just barely edges out our much cheaper GTR5 at stock CPU settings.
Fan noise can be a concern on the GTR5 which is to be expected when you cram such a demanding processor into a 0.8 L case. Furthermore, your GPU power will be limited due to the lack of any discrete GPU or external GPU options. If you’re looking to maximize CPU performance and CPU performance-per-dollar, however, then the GTR5 will be a better deal than any Intel NUC at the moment.
