Pennsylvania is certainly no stranger when it comes to the realm of esports (just look at Harrisburg University).
And a recent list just confirmed this sentiment after placing Pennsylvania amongst the top five states who make the most money from esport tournaments.
Conducted and published by sports betting platform, the Action Network, the study pieced together data collected from the top 500 esports players from around the country. From there, the Action Network divvied them up by state and came to observe which made the most mulah from industry competitions.
It was discovered that California was king when it came to overall esports earnings with its cool $21.5 million. Texas was number two with about $12.1 million in earnings, and ye olde Pennsylvania at number three with roughly $8.5 million.
The Action Network adds, “players in California are capitalizing on the multi-million dollar industry the most, with gamers in the Golden State winning an incredible $21.5M in prize money—17 percent of the overall pot of $126.2M won by the top-500 players.”
Yes, you read that correctly—esports has brought in millions in prize money for the United States, and is actually worth over $1 billion worldwide.
As for the games these esports competitors are making so much money off of, well, those are many and varied: The number one spot was taken by the “Call of Duty” franchise (which brought in an estimated $28.4 million); number two by “Fortnite ($26.8 million); and number three by Dota ($13.6 million).
An honorable mention included on the list is virtual chess game, chess24, which earned over $915,500.
