A Plant City man who killed a woman after speeding through a neighborhood, was sentenced to 30 years in prison, on Friday.
In April 2020, Terrell Rollins led law enforcement on a chase, in Plant City, after they attempted to pull him over for illegal window tinting.
During the pursuit, the 27-year-old reach a speed of over 90 mph.
He ran a stop sign at the intersection of Warren Street and Maryland Avenue and slammed into the SUV of Amanda Renee Holmes-Williams.
She instantly died at the scene, the Hillsborough State Attorney’s Office said in a press release.
The State Attorney’s Office also stated that Rollins fled without offering aid to the 53-year-old woman.
He was later apprehended after being found hiding in the backyard of a nearby house.
In court, the families of Rollins and Holmes-Williams were present, both pleading the judge for mercy on behalf of the convict.
On the stand Catina Lott, niece of Holmes-Williams, asked the judge to grant Rollins leniency before turning to him and stating “Do what you’ve got to do and do it right. Change your way of thinking, change your heart.”
Latoya Broome broke down in tears as she asked the judge to have pity on her son.
“Please have mercy on him,” she said. “This was an accident. I know in a million years – he’s not that type of child.”
Holmes-Williams was a sister, mother, and grandmother.
The sentencing came after Rollins was convicted in January for third-degree murder, fleeing and attempting to elude a police officer, vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of a crash with death, and driving with a license canceled, revoked, or suspended.
This is his third sentence after having priors in March 2015 and August 2018.
