Esports, Texas A&M University-San Antonio’s up-and-coming gaming organization, is in search of a new head coach.
The young organization is looking to grow, with hopes of recruiting students from San Antonio and beyond.
When former head coach Travis Yang found a new opportunity it left Arturo Olague, director of Recreational Sports, with the task of finding someone to build upon the structure left by Yang.
Yang started with A&M-San Antonio’s esports team in Jan. 2020, when the team was established. Yang left in December 2021 to start his new position as director of varsity esports at Wichita State University.
“What we really want to do is move forward with the foundation that Coach Yang left us,” Olague said on Feb. 17.
Olague said the organization is comfortable with what they already have. The foundation built by Yang is what the team is familiar with, Olague is now just looking for someone to keep it in tack.
“We are at a point to where we are very comfortable with the game selection that we have,” Olague said. “We are very comfortable with the student-athletes that are on campus.”
Olague is in charge of the search and hiring process for the esports coach.
The search for a new head coach “got going in February.,” Olague said.
Even though the head coach position is still open, Graduate Assistant Anna Deleon has been assisting with the esports student-athletes.
“She’s helping to make sure the teams stay organized within the league,” Olague said.
Olague said he expects the head coach position to be filled by the end of March. However, there will not be a new coach on campus until summer 2022.
There are four candidates for the position. Due to privacy reasons, Olague cannot share the names of those individuals at this time.
Olague is encouraging new students to consider joining esports, experience is not required.
